A 2024 study in Frontiers found that 2-deoxy-D-ribose helped hair regrowth in mice with thinning hair by boosting scalp blood flow, performing comparably to minoxidil, a well-known hair growth ingredient.
Scientists applied 2dDR to a group of mice that were missing hair due to androgenic alopecia. They also had three control groups of mice; one group was treated with minoxidil (Rogain), another group was treated with a combination of both 2dDR and minoxidil, and the third was left untreated. The 2dDR group had similar effects in growing new hair as the minoxidil group, the combo group did not exhibit any difference from the individually treated mice, and the untreated mice did not regrow hair.
The effects of 2dDR on hair growth were similar (80%–90%) to those of the FDA-approved drug (minoxidil).
This proved that 2-deoxy-D-ribose is just as effective (at least 80-90%) as minoxidil without the side effects. Combining 2-deoxy-D-ribose with minoxidil did not make a difference, as they seem to work using the same mechanism: by stimulating the production of VEGF, a protein that plays a key role in promoting the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis).
